Mattie, a spayed female Poodle/Spaniel mix, was rescued from the dog pound one hour before she was scheduled to be killed. She had been picked up by the dog catcher as a stray and her time was up.
No one knows how she ended up on the streets, but she was extremely thin and flea infested. She had obviously belonged to someone because her hair had been chopped off and she looked terribly ragged.
When the pound called me about her, they guessed her to be an "elderly" dog. They said she was ten years old or more. She weighed 12 pounds and you could feel every bone in her emaciated little body. She now weighs eighteen pounds. The vet she is seeing now guesses her to be about six years old.
Mattie is now very playful and loving. She adores children. She is not good with cats.
She has "hot spots" due to skin allergys and must be kept clean and groomed, otherwise she gets "itchy" and chews her hair off.
Mattie needs a home where she can get a lot of attention and love. She would probably be better as an only dog or as a companion to a male dog.
UPDATE: Mattie was adopted Saturday, September 11, 1999 and now has a loving, permanent home.
